THE FORGOTTEN FACES OF THE FORGOTTEN COAST
a collection
Two decades ago, I moved from Ashland, Oregon
to the Panhandle of Florida. I'd done so after taking a brief hiatus from my photography studio and business which had grown so quickly that it overwhelmed me.
While I was so grateful and passionate about holding a camera, I didn't want any part of the lifestyle I felt almost swept up into--working so much that I allowed myself to lose balance.
So I landed in a sleepy little town called Mexico Beach with just three large boxes.
This little slice of heaven called to my heart--tapping into memories of my childhood, with a slower pace.
Locals were sitting on porches, socializing often, watering their lawns with old sprinklers...and mowing with push mowers.
These kind hearted people were generous, real, and absolutely had stories to tell.
I started to interview the older generation--those who sat on the porch--and would share their lifetime stories with me.
The collection was exhibited at what was the Panama City and was shown in conjunction with famous photographer Clyde Butcher's wilderness and Florida Landscape imagery.
Today, what's left of these boards after Hurricane Michael were donated to the Mexico Beach Visitor's Bureau.

HURRICANE MICHAEL
In 2018 Hurricane Michael was a direct hit on Mexico Beach, Florida.
It will never look or feel the same.
There are always silver linings to hardship, but the loss that is experienced with a catastrophic natural disaster is on a level of its own.
While it brings us together, and in some ways demonstrates every single thing we should practice daily between one another--the insurance companies are set up to mitigate their own loss by denying yours. And without a just recovery, as a victim, you experience yet another loss.
I have been working on this project since, and am not sure if it will take form as an exhibit or a book. But it is a story I cannot leave untold.
The rebuilding shows a level of tenacity, spirit, faith and human spirit
that I am in awe of.

IN A CHILD'S EYE
An exhibit created and shown in the Panhandle. This exhibit was a
marriage of my father's photography and my words., speaking into
the loss of family, and compromises due to cultural changes.
More to come. These files/boards were also lost in the
hurricane.

A COOKBOOK: 5 INGREDIENTS OR LESS
(For those of us who hate to follow recipes, instructions or directions).
I have been a health nut since I was in my twenties. But truthfully,
growing up in California, we almost never had treats, sweets,
fake or fast food. Our meals were always balanced & fresh.
Today, I love good food--but am amazed how many people
think cooking at home has to be a time-consuming chore.
Almost everything I make has five ingredients or less--and
can be made in less than 20 minutes..
This project was initially created as a gift for a friend, and
is in the process of being redesigned.

MY FATHER, MY FAITH:
a book about my father, the late, great cartoonist, Alexander Toth (www.AlexanderToth.com), and the last year of his life.
REVIEWS: "Your work should be read by many who are either dealing with similar challenges or who have gone through parental losses."-B.S.
"Many many thanks for your wonderful book. I read it straight thru--two days and couldn't put it down. It filled in a lot of spaces about Alex and his last years."-J.H.
"I’m pleased to say My Father, My Faith more than delivers on its promise of being a Toth book like no other. Dana offers a sometimes gripping, sometimes funny, always honest account of the artist’s final years, in which he found at least a degree of the serenity he had sought for so long. She also unflinchingly chronicles the shortfalls in his medical treatment that threatened to prematurely send him to meet his maker (the quote that fronts Chapter Seventeen is pure Alex Toth, a remark to a stuffed-shirt doctor that is stripped to the merest essentials as it conveys humor and rebuke in equal measure)." - Bruce Canwell--The Library of American Comics
